The Robot Handshake research project aimed to create a robotic hand that enhances realism and comfort during human-robot handshakes. The design incorporated compliant palm materials and anthropometric data, with hydrated polyacrylamide balls proving the most realistic. Experiments compared the new design to rigid hands, measuring epidermal activity and user feedback. Results showed the novel hand was significantly more realistic and comforting, though further improvements were suggested, such as extending compliant material to fingertips.
